Key factors for investing in Citrix
Centralising I.T. resources and administration - Utilising
Citrix technologies reduces the amount of remote infrastructure
investment not only in the purchase costs, but also the
commonly hidden administrative costs associated with supporting
remote infrastructure solutions.
Low -Bandwidth connections - Utilising Citrix enables
those sites whereby the only option available to them
was to either upgrade their network connection (Costly
in some areas of the world) or participate in a non-connected
I.T. environment (workgroup) once again the cost in supporting
such infrastructure is high.
Integrating affiliates and subsidiaries in a cost efficient
solution - Utilising Citrix enables a common cost effective
platform, which also covers all types of site connections
(low-bandwidth, high encryption etc..). Another important
issue that all medium to large enterprises are experiencing
and that man-effort required for Patch management. for
their large volumes of desktop and laptops.
Citrix is not the be all and end all to resolve this issue,
but the question must be asked and that is how many users
require a fully functional device? Is it feasible that
"Thin-Client" devices over
Citrix could potentially replace most if not all common
behavioral type users (User that tend to use non-intensive
applications) The big advantage with this factor is that
the "Thin-Client" device is classed as a dumb
terminal and doesn't require the same sort of aggressive
Operating system upgrade approach to that of a traditional
desktop. The driving force behind O/S upgrade is the application
revisions, within a Thin-Client device the Server is the
application host and therefore the number of devices required
to be upgraded is greatly reduced. The supportability
of WinCE 4.2 is 12 years and therefore those devices do
not need to be maintained over that period, unlike a traditional
XP desktop which requires monthly security updates and
internal periodic releases . This is without the forthcoming
release of Microsoft Longhorn.
Reduce Cost - Another focus for most enterprises is to
reduce cost, although I haven't been able to cross cost
the Citrix solution and traditional client-server platforms,
we have identified the reduction in costs between using
a "Thin-Client" device and a traditional desktop.
This encompassed the purchase and ongoing costs with the
device itself and also the administrative costs in maintaining
the devices.
Flexible access - Using Citrix provides a platform to
allow access to all types of devices and users. Our investigations
into Citrix doesn't stop at internal access within the
company, more and more people are interested in the "working
from home" scenario and most people have or can have
broadband configured in their homes. However the problem
with working from home is the work measurement aspect.
Integrating affiliates and subsidiaries infrastructure
and administration - Using Citrix to provide the same
level of I.T. resources to an affiliate without providing
local infrastructure is certainly a key factor. The amount
of effort in determining site location studies, working
out hardware requirements, Software delivery infrastructures
WINS, DNS etc.. is time consuming, if that affiliate could
access their resources via a centrally hosted Citrix infrastructure
this could potentially speed up the integration of current
business lines, affiliates and subsideries into the Corporate
infrastructure.
