Repton: Bringing the latest technology
to new markets
Repton
have been providing cutting edge IT products and services
to medium to large enterprises for 15 years, helping companies
across industries progress their IT systems. The company
was set up by MD Greg Carlow, who in that time has built
the firm up to the point where it has a multi-million
turnover and works with a number of well-known international
companies. Based in Hanworth, Middlesex, the company employs
65 employees.
Repton is divided into divisions, each of which concentrates
on a specific area of IT. These divisions work together
to supply a total IT perspective to clients. By avoiding
an overly-focused approach, there is no chance for projects
to fall into the trap of sub-optimisation, a problem that
plagues many IT installations. To provide best-inclass
technology, Repton needs best-inclass capabilities. Repton
base their solutions on technology from the world’s
leading vendors, and enjoy top-level accreditation with
them. Whatever the size of a project, from a single stand-alone
system to the most complex clustered solutions, Repton
seek not just to meet but to exceed expectations.
T he company especially focuses on the gaming, finance,
banking, and retail industries. A major gaming group recently
contracted Repton to design and supply a new type of gaming
kiosk for use in its casinos and betting shops. The kiosk
incorporates a host of different technology including
multiple microprocessors, video screens, storage devices,
note readers and token dispensers. Repton also supplies
complete support services, delivered remotely where possible,
which take into account the non-standard hours of business
of a gaming group. The project therefore showcases the
excellent adaptability of Repton when delivering complete
IT packages to its clients.
The company has recently launched a new initiative named
howgoodisit.com, which is intended to give everyone the
opportunity to have exclusive use of enterprise class
installations. This secure computer environment and its
expert support team makes high end computer systems for
porting, development or benchmarking available to end
users, developers and ISVs. One of the featured systems
in this project is the Hewlett Packard Itanium Superdome.
Howgoodisit.com allows clients to book time to benchmark
and evaluate the server, so they are able to fully assess
the technology before making a commitment.
The past 18 months has also seen the successful acquisition
by Repton of Starwand Systems. This has opened up a whole
new marketplace for Repton, as Starwand have an expansive
knowledge of the education sector, with a history of providing
high quality voice and data integration solution services
to both the public and private sectors. Supplying at every
level from schools to universities and adult education,
the organisation complements Repton completely with no
overlap of customers, suppliers or franchises. Continued
investment in people and products has led to Starwand
achieving the highest level of accreditation with key
IT vendors. The integration of Starwand allows Repton
to offer our clients a comprehensive range of services
on most IT platforms utilizing Repton’s existing
resources. Other specialist areas include Storage Area
Networking, security and enterprise solutions. Having
successfully reestablished in this new guise, Starwand
plan to expand further, adding more franchises and experienced
staff to their set-up.
In the future, Repton plan to be where their customers
want them to be. They know that customers want good value,
and as such are constantly seeking to improve services
such as consolidation, allowing companies to increase
IT productivity and eliminate inefficiency. Repton are
currently investigating the latest advancements in virtualisation
– technology that allows for serious upgrades to
infrastructure power or capacity without impacting upon
the existing application networks. Under virtualisation,
an application may see the same servers, networks and
disks as before, but it is in fact connecting to software
that remaps existing pathways to utilise new upgrades.
As an example, this operational continuity allows separate,
system-specific disks to be consolidated into a single
disk farm. Connectivity of this sort must of course be
managed and maintained, and Repton are currently looking
at a number of potential acquisitions that will allow
them to better serve their customers in this area.
With such innovative and useful services as the howgoodisit.com
programme, coupled with the expansion into new markets
and the advantages brought by its recent acquisition,
Repton are clearly an inventive IT company who are able
to push forward the advantages of tailored IT packages
for almost any type of company. At Lifestyles for Business

Repton recognises that the IT climate has reached a point
where progressively less money is spent on products and
services as opposed to complete solutions. Naturally,
Repton are seeking to be a part of that trend, particularly
focusing on the industries mentioned above, and the firm
is investing significant amounts to ensure its capability.
While other IT companies spend a lot of time talking about
‘fully integrated solutions’, Repton is actively
employing its ability to implement wide-scale IT systems
deployments – they genuinely supply what the customer
wants, rather than just giving them the tools to achieve
it.
